Merseyside Improvisors Orchestra Concert under the direction of David Leahy and with special guests Paloma Carrasco and Loz Speyer. 27/5. 8pm.

The Merseyside Improvisers Orchestra

David Leahy, bass player, composer, improvisor and contact dancer, who’ll be directing the orchestra this month writes about the concept behind the concert.

‘Musicians in space’ is based on the argument that the formal separation and the static positioning of the audience and performer does little to support a musical process, such as free improvisation, that is supposedly built on the close inter-relationship of all the elements of a performance ecosystem.
The Orchestra, needless to say are really excited about exploring his concept, and intrigued about how it will change the way we play and sound. Also for this concert we’ll be joined by old friends, the Spanish cellist and dancer Paloma Carrasco and trumpet player Loz Speyer. Loz returning again after directing the orchestra for their successful Sun Ra celebration and, Paloma after playing solo and with the orchestra for the concert in July 2016.

27th May. 8pm

Here is the recording of one of my last pieces, Philomela. Philomela has been an amazing project that started with the Rosamond Prize pairing of composers from the Royal Northern College of Music and poets from Manchester Metropolitan University. I really enjoyed creating this music for flute, mezzo-soprano, vibraphone and flute, from the inspiring poem by Georgi Gill. Since I listen Georgi reciting poems and talking about David Bowie I knew we needed to work together. This is Georgi’s blog so you can know her work a bit more:

I hope you enjoy the poem and the music, we are both very happy with the result and soon we have more coming, something dark, very dark… and with more collaborators.
